LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- From public housing to premium living, a transformation is taking place at the former Sheppard Square Housing Projects.

Crews have already finished several buildings in the area, and the first residents are expected to move in by the end of the year.

For those with deep roots in Sheppard Square, it's good news.

"I was born and raised here," said Angela Kelly, one of hundreds of people who had to find a new home when the Sheppard Square Housing Projects came down in early 2012.

"It has a lot of history and no matter what went down up here, it was still a place where we lived, we enjoyed and we really miss," said Kelly.

Sheppard Square is part of the a Hope VI revitalization project and will be replaced with mixed income housing.

"We got to move fast because we have a very strict deadline imposed upon us by HUD," said Tim Berry, executive director of the Metro Housing Authority.

Berry says the first units should be finished by the end of the year.

The old Presbyterian Community Center is also being renovated.

"[The Presbyterian Community Center] will be converted to community space and apartments for seniors and disabled vets," said Berry.

Meanwhile, as crews work to complete the first part of the project, the list of people who want to make it their new home is growing.

"We've had over 300 people -- non-Sheppard residents who have expressed an interest," Berry said.

Former Sheppard Square residents like Kelly have also expressed interest, although she admits she does not want all of her old neighbors return.

Most of them that lived up here didn't deserve to be up here because it was a lot of beef," Kelly said.

The entire project is scheduled to be finished by 2015.
