Arch Coal laying off 110 workers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Reduced operations at Arch Coal Inc. is costing 110 employees their jobs.

The St. Louis-based company said on Friday that the layoffs will affect the Cumberland River and Hazard mining complexes.

A company source cited "ongoing coal market challenges" as the reason behind the layoffs.

The curtailed operations will eliminate 110 jobs, 65 of them company positions and the rest are contractor jobs outside the company.

The Cumberland River mining complex is located in Letcher County, Ky., and Wise County, Va. The Hazard Mining Complex is in Perry County, Ky.

The company says eligible workers will be offered severance packages and also states that the two complexes still employ nearly 500 people.
