LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Seven people remain hospitalized after a bus carrying dozens of high school students crashed on I-64 Tuesday afternoon.
Six patients were still recovering at University Hospital Wednesday, and another one is at Kosair Children's Hospital.
But some were fortunate: they came out uninjured.
We talked to an incoming Junior who had the wind knocked out of him, but is otherwise doing okay. Brendan O'Hern had just woken up from a nap, when he felt the wheels drop beneath him.
"Right when we stopped and I couldn't breathe, I was thinking, 'I could die right here on this bus,'" O'Hern said. "All of a sudden you hear this huge explosion."
The bus began swerving toward the interstate median -- full of Waggener High School students and faculty.
"When we started swerving, I saw the median coming, and my first thought was, 'Okay, we are going to either hit it, or flip over,'" he said.
It hit, which Brendan says sent many flying across the aisle, or straight into the seat in front of them.
"I was trying to catch my breath instantly, and as I was trying to catch my breath, I saw my friend in front of me, who started bleeding instantly," he said. "He had blood all over his shirt and face."
Kosair Children's Doctor Adam Isacoff was on-hand as 14 children came through the Emergency Room doors.
"We saw a lot of bumps and bruises, a lot of kids that were complaining of back pain and some headaches, and some of the children needed lab evaluation and x-rays," he said.
Dr. Isacoff says, with such a variety of injuries, emotions were mixed among patients.
"Some of them were playful and kind of making jokes, and some of them were noticeably anxious and upset," Dr. Isacoff said.
We tried to reach the bus company for comment. They were unavailable.
For his part, Brendan, says he'll never forget, although he isn't worried. In fact, he rode a public bus to our interview.
We have safety records from Commonwealth Bus Services, and according to the Federal Motor Carrier Association, the company has a satisfactory rating. The has no previous crashes on its record.
