Taylorsville Police also looking for Bardstown cop killer

TAYLORSVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police detectives and Bardstown Police are not the only ones looking for a cop killer.

The murder of Officer Jason Ellis hits close to home for the Taylorsville Police Department.  Ellis was shot and killed in the early morning hours of May 25 on the Bluegrass Parkway -- that's not far from Taylorsville. The shooting has changed the way officers at the small department do their jobs.

"You have to be aware of your surroundings; it's just the way that it is, like you say, it's a wake up call," said Officer Todd Walls, with Taylorsville Police.

And despite its small size and lack of manpower, the Taylorsville Police Department and officers like Walls are part of the big mission.

"I am familiar with some of the officers and we communicate back and forth sometimes and it hits close to home," Walls said.

Kentucky State Police detectives have been looking for the person who killed Officer Ellis, and so have Taylorsville Police.

"Makes you want to pick up the phone now and call and say 'look, maybe this is something that could help them out,'" Walls said.

The murder has also changed the way Walls and other officers police the community.

"A lot of times when you ride by and maybe see an officer that's on a traffic stop you want to make sure and back them up," Walls said.

And it has changed the way police respond to scenes, according to Walls.

"I'm more aware, I would say that's definitely the case; and just make sure that you're calling off that license plate before you get out because you never know what's going to happen."

Meanwhile, there's still a six-figure reward being offered in the Ellis case. Anyone with information or tips should contact Kentucky State Police Detectives.
