I was in Turkey a week or so ago with Greater Louisville Inc. It was an amazing tour of a breathtaking country.
But I feel like Turkey is a well kept secret here in the U.S. People don't talk about it much, they don't generally dream of vacationing there, and the news media pretty much ignores it.
At least until the protests in Istanbul began. From the reports I saw on CNN and the BBC, you would have thought the whole country was on fire! Not true.
North of Taksim Square in Istanbul is a park. Prime Minister Erdogan has proposed building a shopping mall there. A small group of people opposed to the mall set up camp in the park to protest peacefully, and frankly, the police overacted. That made the protests become more active and caused them to spread. Now the protests have shifted focus to Erdogan himself.
I don't have a crystal ball but sources there tell me this too will pass. Turkey is a democracy, and all democracies, including ours, experience protests like this from time to time. It shouldn't dissuade you from considering traveling to Turkey.
GLI is hosting another trip this fall to Brazil. I have found GLI's trips to be very safe and well organized at a good price. There is only about a week left to register for Brazil so give them a call.
