LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- U of L basketball fans arrived at the KFC Yum! Center six hours early to get Rick Pitino's signature on a commemorative Maker's Mark bottle.
The event started at 5 p.m., but fans showed up at 11 a.m. and the line soon stretched out the door.
Everyone able to purchase the limited number of tickets -- which sold out in 60 seconds -- had the chance for Pitino to sign the bottles personally.
More than 12,000 Maker's Mark bottles featuring Rick Pitino's face on the label were sold, but only 700 tickets were available for this event. The proceeds benefited the U of L Academic Center of Excellence.
For the many fans who missed out on the signing event, Coach Pitino assured them that this was not the only chance for a signature.
"I don't know how that's possible, but the one thing I will say is a lot of people got shut out of this and I'm going to make time throughout the summer," Pitino said about another signing event. "We'll give them a weeks notice and go somewhere and sign another 300 or 400 at a time. I'll make sure I get out to them."
Coach Pitino also said he enjoyed the unforgettable season, in which the men's basketball team won the national championship and Pitino was elected into the Hall of Fame, but he's already excited about next season.
