Man dies in Blue River canoeing accident

HARRISON COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) -- A man rescued from the Blue River just hours after a teenager drowned nearby has died.

Authorities say 69-year-old Will Chappell and 56-year-old Shirley Chappell were canoeing on the river when their boat hit a log and capsized.

First responders rescued the couple as WDRB was on the scene to cover a separate drowning incident.

"When emergency responders got there, the man was in and out of consciousness," said Jim Hash of the DNR.

Will Chappell was airlifted to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead Wednesday evening, according to Harrison County Coroner Rusty Sizemore.
