Bridges Downtown Crossing construction to begin

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Drivers, get ready for headaches.  There are going to be some major roadblocks before we get two new Ohio River Bridges.  The Second Street Bridge will close for a month next year. And a major link between interstates shuts down for three years.  The bridges are about to become a reality, and so are some big traffic problems.

"We deliver about 70 percent of our loads to Louisville every single day," says Buddy Yates, Logistic Manager for Eagle Steel Products.  Yates' company has nearly a hundred trucks on Kentuckiana roads every day.  He says, "So I might have one truck go across the bridge four times a day."

That's why heading into this major downtown crossing construction project, Yates is preparing his drivers and customers.  "We'll get with our customers and we'll figure out a plan on what we need to do to try to deliver in off peak hours where we are avoiding the traffic as much as possible," says Yates.

The first of several construction projects connected to The Ohio River Bridges Downtown Crossing will happen on July 8th.  It will close the ramp from Interstate 64 east to I-65 southbound.

"And when that closes, that is going to be a closure that is going to be with us for sometime; that is a closure that last one-thousand days so that is nearly the duration of the project," says Mindy Peterson, Spokesperson for Bridges Project Downtown Crossing.

Next May, the Second Street Bridge will close for thirty days.

Here are all of the closures:

Peterson says, "This is one of the largest transportation projects in the country, so when you are building a bridge and redoing an interchange...revamping Spaghetti junction, there are going to be closure along the way; you can not avoid it."

But despite all of the upcoming closures, there is one upside.  "Walsh has committed to keeping two lanes of interstate traffic flowing in each direction for the duration of the project," says Peterson.

Here's something that might really help drivers down the road -- the Downtown Crossing group is in the process of putting together a website that will keep motorists informed about all of the construction projects and what's to come.
