Art idea aims to capture county's squirrely past

WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP) -- Central Indiana residents could soon go nuts over an invasion of squirrels.

A team from the Hamilton County Leadership Academy has proposed installing decorated squirrel statues at key sites as part of an initiative called The Great Squirrel Art Stampede. Organizers say they hope the project will attract tourists and give local residents fun things to do.

The idea for the project stems from the county's history. The Indianapolis Business Journal reports more than 100,000 migratory squirrels swarmed through Westfield and Fishers in the 1820s.

The volunteer group has hired an artist to sculpt a pair of foam squirrels to be used as molds for the statues.

Each fiberglass squirrel could cost up to $1,000. The group's next challenge is to find funding for the project.
