Mentally ill Indiana inmates could move to new facility

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- All of the Indiana prison system's seriously mentally ill inmates could be moved by January to a central location designed for their care.

Indiana's Department of Corrections says those inmates would move to a new treatment center at a prison in Pendleton.

A federal judge ruled this past December that simply locking up mentally ill prisoners without adequate treatment violated their constitutional rights against cruel and unusual punishment.
