BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- Indiana University is taking steps to prevent students from swiping bricks that pave the pathway near the iconic Sample Gates on the Bloomington campus.

All of the bricks from the Kirkwood Avenue entryway east to the Student Building will be removed and reset in asphalt instead of a sand base as part of a project to refurbish the site.

IU vice president Tom Morrison tells The Herald-Times that bricks often would go missing toward the end of a semester and before graduation. He says university officials think people would take bricks that had become dislodged.

Morrison says each missing brick created a safety hazard and that resetting the bricks in asphalt will make them less susceptible to removal.
