Despite cuts, Fort Knox's iconic status endures

Posted: Updated:

FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) -- Despite a decision to eliminate its only combat brigade, Kentucky's Fort Knox has a rock-solid place in pop culture, thanks to its mysterious gold vault.

The historic base houses the Treasury Department's U.S. Bullion Depository and its stacks of gold and has been the setting for blockbuster Hollywood films. It also was the longtime home to the Army's tank training school.

But Knox's days as a war-fighting post may be over with the Pentagon decision last week to eliminate its combat brigade. That follows the loss of its prestigious armor school a few years ago.

Business owners in surrounding communities say the loss of the brigade could hurt, but they're optimistic the post has a crucial future role to play in the Army. The departing brigade has about 3,300 members.
