After the close of the contest, an esteemed panel of judges, including Larry Bloemer of Bloemer Food Sales Co., Chef Graham Weber of BLU Italian Grille and Champion's Sports Bar, Chefs Clay Cundiff and Mike New of Morrison Healthcare Food Services, and Chef Jason Pierce of Sidebar, will review the entrants and choose a winner and runner-up. Results will be announced on the Kosair Children's Hospital Facebook page by Aug. 16. The winner will receive a $100 Kroger gift card, and the runner-up will receive a $50 Kroger gift card.
Carlos' Homestyle Bar-B-Que Sauce is a gourmet sauce developed by beloved Kosair Children's Hospital cystic fibrosis patient Carlos Turner. It is available at 75 area Kroger stores throughout Kentucky and Indiana and online at www.bloemerfoods.com . The sauce's creation and distribution fulfills the last wish and dream of Carlos, who died in 2008.
The sweet, full-bodied sauce features honey, molasses, brown sugar and a smoke flavor with an array of spices - far beyond a run-of-the-mill tomato-based barbecue sauce. It also is free of anchovy derivatives, a common ingredient in many other barbecue sauces. Carlos' Homestyle Bar-B-Que Sauce was recently named a Kentucky Proud product. Proceeds from sales of the sauce benefit child life, art therapy and volunteer programs and services at Kosair Children's Hospital.
Carlos lived in the small central Kentucky city of Greensburg, and after being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at a young age, spent the majority of his life at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville. Before he died at age 16, Carlos developed his recipe for barbecue sauce, which he kept secret from his family and friends. He even saved his allowance to purchase a safe in which to keep the recipe in his family's home.
Because of his life-threatening illness, Carlos was granted a wish through the Make-a-Wish Foundation that enabled him to go on a shopping spree to purchase cooking equipment, utensils and ingredients to prepare several special recipes, including his barbecue sauce.
As his death neared, child life and expressive therapy staff at Kosair Children's Hospital worked with Carlos to discuss his legacy and ease his passing. He determined that legacy should be the production of his barbecue sauce, which would be sold to benefit Kosair Children's Hospital.
