LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's the cause for celebration, and the very words that our nation holds sacred.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness," read Congressman John Yarmuth.
Yarmuth joined the Jefferson County Democratic Party for an annual reading of the Declaration of Independence at Metro Hall.
Party officials say it's a tradition they hold dear because it was Democrats like Thomas Jefferson who wrote the declaration.
"A declaration of independence was really an act of war in those days," said Jefferson County Democratic Party chairman Bill Ryan. "We just try to remind everybody, particularly the young folks, that we didn't get here easily without these guys writing this declaration of independence."
The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, when the 13 colonies announced their independence from Great Britain.
