NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) -- A new shark ray is joining the four already swimming in Newport Aquarium's shark exhibit.

The aquarium will transfer the adult female Wednesday afternoon from its warehouse to the 385,000-gallon exhibit. The new shark will join Sweet Pea, Scooter, Spike and Sunshine.

Curator Mark Dvornak says there's concern about shark ray populations because they aren't often seen and some cultures seek them for food. He says it's hoped the shark rays will reproduce eventually in an enclosed setting, but meanwhile, the facility is collecting data with the goal of helping preserve the species.

Marketing Director Lynn Margason says there will be a naming contest for the new shark ray, originally from Taiwan. She says the species is "very graceful" and has "soulful eyes."
