Purse snatching leads to shooting near St. Matthews

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --  It started out as a purse snatching and ended with a woman being shot.  Around 3:15 Friday morning, the woman was shot in a parking lot near St. Matthews.

Police say it all started after the suspects tried to steal her purse in a parking lot near Meridian Cafe. That's when the shooting happened.

A Saints Pizza and Pub manager says the woman and another man came to the restaurant asking for help. He says their employees called 911 and helped the woman until police arrived. Police say the woman is expected to survive.

"Apparently when she was in that parking lot, two black males came up and engaged her in conversation," said Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman Dwight Mitchell. "As a result of that conversation, one of them attempted to steal her purse. They received her purse and also brandishing a handgun at that point, which one shot was fired and struck the female victim in the forearm."

Police say in the parking lot, the men may have used a gun to hit her in the face. Police believe the men may have left in a silver vehicle similar to a Honda Accord. The manager at Saints says the car was missing one mirror.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the anonymous police tipline at 574-LMPD.

Police say they do not have a more specific description of the two suspects.
