Conway meets with DOE official about Paducah plant

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Attorney General Jack Conway has met with U.S. Energy Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman about the future of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant that is being shuttered.

Conway said he met with Poneman Tuesday to discuss efforts to clean up nuclear material from the site in western Kentucky and efforts to preserve jobs at the plant which employs nearly 1,100 workers.

The meeting comes less than a month after Gov. Steve Beshear met with Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. Conway says state officials are presenting a "united front" to assure that concerns from western Kentucky residents are met.

The Cold War-era plant, operated by USEC Inc., opened in 1952 to develop enriched uranium for military reactors and to produce nuclear weapons. The plant began selling uranium for commercial reactors in the 1960s.
