Save money with smart back to school computer shopping

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's that time of year when kids everywhere are gearing up to head back to school.

Like a lot of kids, UK freshman Sean Garvey is connected. He stays connected through his cell and a computer at the same time.

Garvey says staying connected while in school is important to getting work done.

"You have to have a computer in college, to type papers, to print them out, to do research. There's really not an option," Garvey said.

The options start though when it comes to type, brand, and price of different computers.

If you're a parent, you know what type of computer you kids want -- but, do you have to go with something as expensive as an apple, or can you buy something a bit cheaper?

The Geek Squad at Best Buy says it depends on what grade your student is in.

For elementary school students small tablets may be the best option.

"You can go with a 'Kindle Fire' or any of the other tablets. They're all kind of in the same range. That way, you're not breaking your bank," Geek Squad tech Nathan McKinley.

For middle and high school a laptop may be the best choice. Students will have to write papers, and will need enough space on a hard drive to save their work.

But, at this stage of your child's life by not choosing a high-end brand of computer, like an Apple, may save you major bucks. Brands like Dell, Acer, and Toshiba would work as better options.

"You're still able to do what you need to do without buying an Apple," McKinley said.

The top of the line computers, like Apple, or those new touch screen HPs, are really only suited for college students, like Garvey.
