This is why I wake up in the morning because you never know what you're going to hear.
After six days of testimony the Louisville Metro Council Court came to two decisions Thursday morning. The first is that Barbara Shanklin is guilty of misconduct and that she personally benefited from some of the $38,000 in city funds for which she was responsible. The second decision the Metro Council Court came to is that it is OK to serve on the council if you are at best incompetent and at worst a crook. It's fine. Not a problem.
Shanklin's own attorney in her defense said if she was guilty it was only of slip shod record keeping, stupidity and ignorance. His words. Yup, that's what we're looking for on the Metro Council.
In fairness, most of the Metro Council members are embarrassed with this decision. And they should be. As David Tachau, the prosecutor said, "If you acquit her, you are saying you don't care." I would agree with that.
The bigger problem is how can Shanklin even hope to be effective now? So many bridges have been burned. The majority of the council -- her colleagues! -- said they think she's corrupt. She has divided the council even more than it was before. How does this help our city?
The Metro Council has created a bigger problem by keeping her than she ever created through her misappropriations of funds.
I'm Bill Lamb…and that's my Point of View.
