New Navy ship to carry USS Indianapolis name

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Survivors of the USS Indianapolis sinking have learned that name will be given to a new combat ship, pending approval by Congress.

Midwest Navy Region Commander Rear Admiral Rick Williamson on Saturday night read a letter from Navy Secretary Ray Mabus saying he has notified Congress that he intends to name the next littoral combat ship the USS Indianapolis.

Littoral combat ships can operate close to shore and in open waters to counter threats from some submarines and fast surface craft.

About half of the remaining 38 survivors are holding a reunion in Indianapolis this weekend.

Only 317 of the ship's crew of nearly 1,200 sailors and Marines survived the July 30, 1945, sinking in shark-filled waters after delivering components of the atomic bomb that later was dropped on Hiroshima.
