LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police are investigating after the body of an infant was discovered in the bathroom of a Kohl's in south Louisville.
Officials say the body was discovered in the bathroom of the Kohl's on Standiford Plaza Drive at 5:54 p.m. on Thursday.
LMPD spokesperson Alicia Smiley says homicide investigators believe the infant was post-term, but could not comment on whether the baby was stillborn.
"Our 7th division officers responded to the scene and were able to confirm that there was a body of what appeared to be a post-term infant inside the bathroom that was deceased," she said.
Smiley was unable to confirm whether or not the baby was found in a trash can, as initial reports from Metrosafe informed WDRB, but she did say the baby was found in the bathroom.
Police are handling it as a death investigation.
"We have to await the coroner and the medical examiner to see exactly whether or not this baby was fully two term and also whether or not is was a still born , whether or not it actually lived at any point," said Smiley.
Detectives are interviewing employees and pulling surveillance footage to learn more.
Kohl's remained open during the investigation, just blocking off the restroom area.
"We believe all the evidence and everything we need will be located back there in the bathroom area," Smiley told WDRB.
But that disturbed some customers who were shopping inside the store, but unaware of the situation.
"I figured somebody was either hurt or dead in the bathroom but never in my life did I think it would be a baby," said Sheryl Johnson.
The public is asked to call 574-LMPD if they have any information that might help police in the case.
