School Smarts: Healthy breakfast options for all ages

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Back-to-school time means it's time for kids and teens to get back into the swing of a daily morning routine.

Baptist Health dietician Marsha Hilgeford says it's important to know that you can make healthy options for breakfast that won't take up a lot of time.

"I've never met anyone who didn't want to send their kids off with the best breakfast they possibly could. But we're all in such a hurry," Hilgeford says.

She says it's important to give kids complex carbohydrates, fiber and protein in what they eat for breakfast.

Hilgeford says one good breakfast option could be a mix of a high fiber cereal, almond butter and honey. Children could also make their own "breakfast sundaes" with yogurt, fruit and granola.

She also suggests a breakfast burrito with low-fat sausage and eggs, as well as muffins made with oatmeal and yogurt.
