MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) -- An American eel that a fisheries biologist believes swam from the Atlantic Ocean into the Mississippi River and beyond has been discovered in central Indiana's White River.
The 30-inch-long female eel was found last week during a fish survey along the White River in Muncie. Fisheries biologist Drew Holloway with Muncie's water quality office calls it "once-in-a-lifetime catch."
Holloway tells The Star Press he believes the snake-like fish traveled from the Sargasso Sea south of Bermuda up the Mississippi to the Ohio River to the Wabash River and into the White River.
The eel surfaced with other fish when Holloway applied an electric current to the river's waters during a fish population survey.
Holloway says Muncie's water quality office also found an eel in the river in 1986.
