Inspector foils attempted theft on bridge

Posted: Updated:

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky Transportation officials say they think a bridge inspector stopped the theft of metal from a historical marker on the Tennessee River bridge at Ledbetter.

Transportation Cabinet engineer Jim LeFavre says a bridge inspector found that bolts securing the marker's metal plate to a concrete monolith had been loosened. He said officials think someone intended to return and steal the metal on the marker dedicating the bridge to Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark.

He said thieves in recent years have taken various metal objects from roads and bridges.

Kentucky transportation officials are asking recycling businesses to be on the lookout for people bringing in suspicious materials and report it to authorities.
