Zoeller urges schools: Tap resource officer grants

Posted: Updated:

ANDERSON, Ind. (AP) -- Attorney General Greg Zoeller is urging schools to apply for grants to hire resource officers and says the program has a better shot of receiving annual funding if educators take advantage of the money available now.

The state created the Indiana Secured School Safety Grant program to provide matching grants to put police and other safety measures in schools. Applications are due Sept. 30.

The bill makes schools eligible for a $50,000 per year grant to hire officers and update security.

The effort was in progress but took on a new urgency after the December school shootings in Newtown, Conn.

Anderson schools Chief Operations Officer Joe Cronk tells The Herald-Bulletin he would use the money for ID-card access readers for doors and better security systems.
