LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a Lowe's worker faces charges after he allegedly stole thousands of dollars stolen from his employer.
According to an arrest report, 24-year-old Joseph Dailey worked as a cashier at Lowe's on Dixie Highway, and used that position to help himself to money by loading gift cards with value and keeping or selling them.
Police say store records indicate the thefts began on July 14 when Dailey started "processing refunds using an administrative code," allowing him to "put money on gift cards."
Store security told police Dailey would type an item code into the cash register, use an administrative code to override the need for a personal ID, and then put the money on a gift card.
The Lowe's Loss Prevention Team became suspicious when they noticed Dailey was using the administrative code to override the need for an ID numerous times, according to an arrest report. Dailey was caught on camera by store video surveillance each time he put the money on the gift cards.
Dailey admitted to police in a written and verbal statement he had been putting the money on the gift cards. According to an arrest report, Dailey would sell the gift cards to friends.
Police say Dailey stole $3,728.02 from July 14 through Aug. 14.
Dailey was arrested Aug. 15. He's charged with theft by unlawful taking.
