LANE l Cats Will Go With Two at QB

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --Mark Stoops confirmed that Max Smith and Jalen Whitlow are Kentucky's top two quarterbacks and both will see action in the opener against Western Kentucky.  He doesn't know which will start at this point or if the starter will be named before the game with the Toppers.

That leaves the third Sophomore, Patrick Towles as the odd man out.

"Yeah, that's who we're going to go with." said Stoops.  "And Patrick (Towles) has been absolutely fantastic during the process. He fought. He wanted to win the starting job, but he's had a great attitude, and that's what I told him. Patrick has been very good, has continued to work extremely hard. He's got as much talent as any quarterback we have on campus, but it's just a matter of letting him grow into the situation a little bit. And he's open to the idea, if the opportunity presents itself, to redshirt. And if we go through the year and neither one of the quarterbacks are getting it done, then we may open it back up. But he's going to prepare to be the third quarterback with the opportunity to redshirt if it presents itself."

Towles was a four-star prospect out of Ft. Thomas Highlands.  He was pressed into service as a true Freshman after injuries to Smith and Whitlow and completed 19-of-40 passes for 233 yards overall and a touchdown on his first collegiate drive against Mississippi State.

Stoops added, "Patrick was very good, very mature, handled it very well. It wasn't an easy conversation, because I know how much he cares and how much he put into it. He handled it the right way. And I know it was easy for me because I was very fair in the whole process. I gave him every opportunity to win the job."

Stoops also said the Wildcats offense seemed to get the better of the defense in Tuesday's scrimmage.

"The offense executed very well, had great enthusiasm. They executed well, did some really good things. Defensively, it wasn't as good a day. We weren't in as good position, didn't make as good of tackles. So overall, not very pleased with the defensive effort (but) good to see the offense bounce back."
