Chocolate Mint Julep Cookies honored in Scratch Bakers Cookie Challenge

The inaugural Scratch Bakers Cookie Challenge at the Kentucky State Fair brought out more than 40 adults to compete with their creative cookie recipes.

New Albany's Dana Fendley won the second place ribbon for her Chocolate Mint Julep Cookies.

For the new 2013 Gold Medal Flour Scratch Bakers Cookie Challenge contestants were asked to make any kind of cookie (any style, shape or size) from scratch using the premium quality of Gold Medal flour.

· Top finishers receive $100, $50 and $25. Judging is based on appearance, flavor and texture.

Chocolate Mint Julep Cookies

Dana Fendley of New Albany (IN), 2nd Place, 2013 Kentucky State Fair

2/3 cup butter, softened

1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

2 tablespoons Bourbon

2 eggs

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 cups Gold Medal All-Purpose Flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

2 cups Andes mint chocolate chips

Combine butter and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl. Beat with mixer until well blended.

Add the extracts and bourbon; mix thoroughly.

Stir in the eggs one at a time.

Combine the dry ingredients in a small bowl and add a little at a time while mixing.

Stir in the chocolate chips.

Shape dough into 1-inch balls and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.

Yields: 60 cookies
