VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) -- Pressure is growing on a northwestern Indiana county to relieve jail overcrowding.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana has notified Porter County that overcrowding at its jail in Valparaiso is unconstitutional.
ACLU attorney Kenneth Falk has notified the Indiana Department of Correction of the overcrowding. The DOC can seek court action restricting use of the jail or an examination by a grand jury.
Porter County Commissioner President John Evans says in an Aug. 15 letter to the County Council that the ACLU echoes concerns raised by the National Institute of Corrections last fall and the DOC in July.
Sheriff Dave Lain tells The (Munster) Times he's seeking 11 new jail officers in next year's budget, including nine needed to staff an unopened third pod at the jail.
