Louisville, Ky. (WDRB) -- Saying both quarterbacks have to play better, UK head coach Mark Stoops announced that the Wildcats will start Maxwell Smith this week in place of Jalen Whitlow against Miami University.
"There's a lot of things," said Stoops. "Just because we're naming Max, we're not putting that loss on Jalen (Whitlow) whatsoever. There's a lot of people that could do things better starting with me. Max, he came in there and did some good things, and Jalen did some good things as well, just like we thought he would. There were some critical errors from both quarterbacks. So we need to improve at that position. We just feel like Max gives us the best opportunity this week."
Whitlow started Saturday's 35-26 loss to Western Kentucky, finishing 10-of-15 passing for 78 yards. He also ran for 81 yards and a touchdown on 7 carries, including a long run of 50 yards.
Smith entered the game with the Cats trailing 35-17 in the fourth quarter and completed 8-of-13 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown.
And as with the opener, it's very possible both will play this week.
"Yes. I think Jalen deserves an opportunity to play," Stoops said. "Again, if Max is going out there and rolling and things are going good, then we'll stay with Max. Yes, we want Jalen to play, and we believe he can bring some diversity to our package and make some people prepare for some different things with his skill set. So, yes, we will always have him ready to go."
Kentucky kicks off Saturday at Noon against Miami (Oh.) at Commonwealth Stadium. The Redhawks lost their opener, 52-14 after being tied at 14 at the half at Marshall.
