LANE l Russ Smith named 1st Team All-American

Louisville, Ky. (WDRB) - U of L Senior Guard Russ Smith has been named a 1st-team All-American by the Blue Ribbon Basketball Yearbook for the upcoming 2013-2014 season.  Smith is joined on the 1st team by fellow senior Doug McDermott of Creighton, Oklahoma State Sophomore Marcus Smart, Michigan State' Senior Adreian Payne and Kansas Freshman Andrew Wiggins.  All five are on the cover of the yearbook. 

Smith was the leading scorer on the Cards' national title team, averaging 18.7 points (35th in the nation) to go with 2.1 steals (36th nationally).  An All-BIG EAST first team selection, Smith was honored as a third team All-American by the Associated Press, The Sporting News and NABC. He was selected as the national Player of the Year by Ken Pomeroy.  The native of Brooklyn, N.Y. was the recipient of the 2012-13 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award for men's basketball.

Smith earned the Most Outstanding Player award of the 2013 NCAA Midwest Regional after matching a career high with 31 points against Oregon and scoring 23 points against Duke.  His 1,235 career points ranks 36th all-time at UofL.  He has a steal in 77 of 96 career games.
