LEWIS | Calipari on Beckham's book and signing and singing

Posted: Updated:

UK coach John Calipari was in Louisville Thursday night for former player Twany Beckham's book release party.

"I think it's great to see him try to do what's he's doing, put a book together, try to do things for charity, I think it's great stuff," said Calipari while meeting the media at the event at Woodhaven Country Club.

Beckham's book is titled "Full Court Press: Conquering Adversity Under Pressure."

"I grew up in downtown Louisville, kind of a rough neighborhood," said Beckham, who graduated from Ballard High School. "I was a kid who grew up with a dream and I reached my dream playing basketball at the University of Kentucky."

Beckham transferred from Mississippi State to UK. Foot injuries and back injuries severely limited his playing time at Kentucky. Watching the games from the bench may have hurt as much, but inspired him to write his book.

"I never really had a backup plan. I put all my eggs in one basket. I thought I would be in the NBA one day but I suffered several injuries throughout my career. I wanted to let people know in my book you need a back-up plan and you need to focus on education because you never know what's going to happen," he says.

Calipari wrote the forward for the book, apparently taking some time between signing another strong recruiting class, celebrating the signings…and going right back to work on another class.

"I'm all excited, I'm singing in my car," said Calipari, "and then I get to the light and I go ‘Oh my, gosh, we're going to lose all these guys. Where's my phone? I started recruiting and made two calls before I hit the door for next year's class. It's crazy."
