WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) -- The tragic death of a 21-year-old eastern Kentucky man has inspired others to become organ donors.
The Mountain Eagle reports that at least 24 people in Letcher County have signed the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry since 21-year-old Jacob Lucas was killed last month in a car crash. Lucas was an organ donor and his heart, kidneys, liver and other organs went to several people in need.
Letcher Circuit Court Clerk Margaret Nichols said several people have called asking about organ donation since learning about Lucas.
She says it has helped make people aware in a county that has the lowest percentage of residents in the state on the registry. According to records, almost 6 percent of residents in the county are signed up. The state average is 40 percent.
