The Home Depot guys say Fall is the time to get your lawn ready for next spring and summer. Joe Autry and Scott Krueger showed WDRB's Candyce Clifft how to get your lawn into shape.
Autry says now is the time to fertilize your lawn. There is a specific fall fertilizer that will get the ground ready for next year's lawn. He recommends that you use a mechanical spreader to get even coverage. Autry says the fertilizer will have instructions on the bag and you should follow them.
Krueger says you de-thatch and over seed your lawn now. There are two ways to de-thatch a lawn. You can use a sturdy rake. He says it's easier and faster to rent a de-thatching machine. He says they cost somewhere between $35 to $75 a day to rent.
Krueger says after you de-thatch, you should also overseed. Patch seed can be used in bare spots and has additives to help it grow. They don't recommend you use straw when putting down patch seed because straw has a weed element.
