El Camino restaurant to open on Bardstown Road

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A California native who has settled in Louisville hopes to bring a little surfer feel to the Bardstown Road restaurant scene.

Shawn Cantley opened the Silver Dollar Restaurant almost two years ago in an old Louisville firehouse on Frankfort Avenue.  "It is going great, knock on wood," says Cantley.

Business is good so Cantley is branching out.  "You try to treat people right and be hospitable," he says. "People around here appreciate that and they keep coming back."

Cantley is in the final stages of getting ready to open another restaurant to be called El Camino, this one on Bardstown Road. But it will be a lot different than the Silver Dollar.  "The Silver Dollar is a monument to the Bakersfield country music sound of the American south meets southern California.

Chantey grew up in southern California and is bringing his experience there to both of his restaurants but in different ways.

"El Camino is more kind of beach California," he explains, "so think like it is two surfers who move to Baja, California and open up a restaurant and bar along the beach."

There is, of course, no beach along Bardstown Road but the new restaurant will have a large outdoor patio and bar.

For a long time Cantley has had plans to open a restaurant in the area.  "I think it will be completely unique to Bardstown Road," says Cantley, "but yet will add to the eclectic, cool fun around here."

The menu at the new restaurant will include Mexican food made from scratch and will have a very large and fancy bar that will serve classic Tiki drinks.

It is a bar that will require some unusual equipment.  "If you look at our business plan you will see a chainsaw on there that is what we will use to get the ice that we need," adds Cantley.

The new restaurant takes over a location in the 1300 block of Bardstown Road that has been empty for about a year after the Avalon Restaurant suddenly closed.

While construction continues in the bar and restaurant area, the kitchen is finished and the staff is busy training for the opening which Cantley hopes will come around the first of October.
