LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Christmas holiday season is still a few months away, but a downtown hotel is already getting ready. The Galt House is looking for about a hundred part-time workers, about half of them to play Christmas characters and the rest for regular hotel jobs.
It keeps getting bigger and better," says Galt House marketing director Rita Reedy. "This is our fourth year and we are adding several new events this year."
November and December used to be slow months for downtown hotels. It was so slow that some staff were laid off over the holidays.
"When meeting planners are planning events and conventions that is not a popular time," explains Reedy, "so we wondered what else can we do to drive tourism so now it is a big multi-million dollar Christmas every year."
Several years ago the Galt House came up with a plan to get people to come to the city during the normally slow times and help fill all of those empty hotel rooms. It was called Christmas at the Galt House and included all kinds of colorful holiday attractions for kids and their parents. Thousands have come and this year there will be even more displays.
Says Reedy, "So every year we continue to grow, so now we are working on a strategic plan because it has been so successful for our company and the city for bringing people downtown."
Next week the Galt House will hold auditions for people who want to play various Christmas characters. The following week there will be a job fair to hire about 50 temporary workers for housekeeping and kitchen work.
