LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- More people than ever before are shopping online.
One result is that eBay's Louisville operation is looking to hire more workers.
eBay, located in the Jefferson Riverport in Southwest Jefferson County plans to almost double the size of its operations so it is in the process of adding 150 permanent jobs.
eBay has grown to become the world's largest online retailer. Its Louisville distribution operation runs online shopping sites for a number of brands and retailers.
New workers are being trained as the operation continues to grow.
"Before we get to the holiday season," says Tobias Hartmann of eBay enterprise, "we want to expand, we have been here since 2000, we have grown so we offer good job opportunities."
The jobs pay an average of $14 an hour.
eBay in Louisville is also looking to hire an additional 1,500 part time seasonal workers.
"We have numerous examples of people starting out as seasonal workers and then moving up and leading fifty or a hundred people as a site manager," says Hartmann.
People like Tammy Tandy. "I am in charge of getting this facility up and running," says Tandy, "so we can start shipping our units out here and get everything going."
Tandy started at eBay nine years ago as a packer and shipper before becoming a supervisor.
She says both the permanent and seasonal jobs are good ones.
"I would definitely say people need to get in here," says Tandy, "it is not just another warehouse job it is definitely a career opportunity."
Wednesday's ribbon cutting of the multi-million dollar expansion includes a brand new building that connects two newly purchased buildings, that use to house another company, with eBay's original operation."
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer spoke at the ribbon cutting.
"You are all lucky to be part of an industry that is going to be growing for a long, long time," says the mayor.
