LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)---The doors to the Presbyterian Community Center remain closed, nearly a month after officials announced, services would stop.
Hundreds of children used the center for recreation, education and other services.
Board members say when the Sheppard Square housing development was demolished last year, the nearby center lost clients and funding.
"There is not a plan to reopen it as of right now, but that doesn't mean we're not thinking about doing that," says Grover Potts, the Board Chairman.
Officials needed nearly $200,000 to help reopen it.
Grover Potts, the Board Chairman, says they have raised more than $50,000 so far.
"I got an email this afternoon that another one of the Presbyterian churches in the community is going to fund a $10,000 gift to the PCC," says Grover Potts.
It's not only the community center they're focused on.
They also wanted to make sure the Presbyterian Child Development Center, located next door, was safe in the meantime.
It offers child care to dozens of children a day
So far officials have been able to keep it open, which has been a relief to parents.
"I was extremely happy to find out that that's not going to be a risk anymore," says Angela Stevens, a parent.
"It's close to my living area. For any my family members that live down here or her other side, it's easy access to come get her and they do a lot of learning," says Jodeci Jeter, a parent.
As for the nearby community center, board members are now having discussions with community groups and churches to see if there is any interest in partnering to reopen it.
With people expected to soon move back to this neighborhood for housing once again, officials say it's essential to make sure there is a place for kids to go when they aren't at school.
"This will be a vital piece of the neighborhood. It still is and it will be ever more so at that time," says Angela Stevens.
Grover Potts says he is hoping they will have enough funds to reopen the community center by the first half of 2014.
