LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville musician will play the call to the post at Keeneland when the track's current bugler retires. Steve Buttleman will take over from the current bugler, George "Bucky" Sallee, who has been at the track for over 50 years.
Buttleman has performed the call to the post at Churchill Downs, Belmont Park, and Oaklawn Park.
"Steve embodies so much of what Keeneland is about," Keeneland President and CEO Bill Thomason said in a news release. "He has a passion for racing and an enthusiasm to share that passion with fans. His No. 1 goal is to make their experience at Keeneland a memorable one."
Sallee will retire and become Bugler Emeritus this fall. "Bucky is a Keeneland icon," said Thomason. "He is a favorite among fans of all ages, having generously shared his time and musical talent with so many people during his storied career. Bucky is a very special member of the Keeneland family, and a wonderful ambassador for racing."
On Friday, Oct. 4, opening day of the fall race meeting, the public is invited to honor Sallee. Gates open at 11 a.m. and special commemorations are planned before the first race at 1:05. During the afternoon, Sallee will sign autographs.
