LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Mercy Academy sits atop not only the state, but the national rankings in high school volleyball.
The Jaguars are 23-0 after winning five matches to capture the Berkeley Prep Premier tournament in Tampa, Florida over the weekend. That included 24 teams throughout the Southeast.
And Mercy is tops in the nation with just one senior on the roster, Auburn signee Courtney Crable and another one of its top players, Junior Merideth Jewell out with stitches in her knee for the last two-and-a-half weeks. She is expected back this week.
"We haven't had a bad practice yet," said head coach Todd Garvey. "We started July 15th and they've come every day focused and just trying to get better and that's our goal. We talked at the beginning of the season about our motto for the year, 'win the day', and that's what we've been doing every day. We take it one day at a time, not looking ahead and they know if they want to have a chance in the end to accomplish our goals, they have to get better every day and they've done a great job of that so far."
Mercy plays at Floyd Central Wednesday, followed by the Brebeuf Tournament in Indianapolis on Saturday. There are also key matches with Assumption and Sacred Heart still to come before the Districts get started on October 21st.
