ST. MATTHEWS, Ky. (WDRB) -- Americans love to shop and later this week Louisville area residents will have a new place to do that, as a popular national retailer has finally come to town.
On Tuesday workers were putting the finishing touches on the new Nordstrom Rack located in the old Circuit City store in the Shelbyville Road Plaza. It will be the first Seattle-based Nordstrom company store to open in Kentucky.
"We are known for shoes," says Nordstrom Midwest District Manager Renata Bakale. "Nordstrom actually started as a shoe store a hundred years ago, so we have racks and racks of shoes."
It also has purses for women, ties for men, plus a lot more. The store has women's, men's, and children's clothing, jewelry, and just about anything you will find in a department store.
Nordstrom Rack sells brand-name merchandise from Nordstrom's regular stores at prices from 30 to 70 percent off. The retailer says it can do this because the items are clearance, close-outs, and end of the season items.
"Our buyers have great relationships with wholesalers, they come together and have some great results," says Bakale.
Cokie Reed was outside the store on Tuesday looking to get inside and was disappointed to learn it doesn't open until later in the week. "I am six feet, four inches tall and wear a size 12 shoe, and they are the only ones who carry shoes I like in my size," she says.
The Nordstrom Rack brand is growing. The St. Matthews location is one of six opening this week across the country.
WDRB News asked Bakale if there is any chance of a regular Nordstrom's store coming to Louisville or to Kentucky. "That would depend upon how well we are received here, and then finding the right location for a full line store is a big deal," she says.
So savvy shoppers will have a new place to shop starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Bakale expects a big crowd to be waiting for the store to open.
There will be a special grand opening celebration at 8 a.m. Thursday. Among other prizes, Nordstrom Rack will give away a $1,000 gift card.
