Clarksville house fire being investigated as crime scene

Posted: Updated:

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A house fire in Clarksville, Ind. is now being investigated as a crime scene.  The Clarksville Police Dept. says the bodies of two people recovered from the fire are "part of the investigation."

The house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire at Brown Station Way and Randolph Avenue around 5:30 a.m.

The Clark County Prosecutor joined investigators at the scene.  Tom Upton with the Clarksville Fire Dept. tells WDRB News, "This is the first one that I've seen that the prosecutor would be on, but we have very few fatalities here in the town.  The last one that I can remember is about four or five years ago."

Neighbors who were awakened by the sound of sirens and fire trucks say the victims were nice people.

"Every morning we left about the same time," said Mark Wilson, who lives nearby. "They was real quiet people and we never had no trouble out of them."

Fire officials say there was some initial difficulty in locating the fire. The first call came in sometime before 5:30 a.m., and firefighters had to circle the area trying to locate the fire because it wasn't visible from the street.

When firefighters entered the home, they were not immediately aware that there were victims inside, and the flames were so intense they had to back out.

The State Fire Marshal will lead the investigation into the cause of the fire.
