LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Fort Knox soldier has died in Afghanistan. 27-year-old Angel Lopez of Parma, Ohio was killed Saturday in Zabul province.
The Defense Department says enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
This was Lopez's first deployment. He was the first soldier in the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, First Infantry Division to die during this deployment.
A memorial service was held Tuesday for Lopez. A ceremony at Fort Knox will be held later.
The military says Lopez's awards and decorations include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Combat Star, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, NATO medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear has ordered the flags at all state office buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the day he is interred.
