Dunn Elementary students send holiday cards to soldiers overseas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky's first lady encouraged school children, and you, to send 50,000 holiday cards and letters to soldiers overseas -- and people at Dunn Elementary School listened.

A student named Faith wrote a note that said, "Thank you for fighting for our country," and that her grandfather fought "in the war."

A soldier later looked at her colorful card, one of dozens the students were eager to make with construction paper, scissors, glue and plenty of markers.

It's part of a program called Holiday Mail for Heroes.  Jane Beshear says those heroes often are lonely during the holidays, thousands of miles from home: "We've got a group of military soldiers here today. And many of them, when they have been deployed, have received cards. And it really makes them feel that somebody cares."

The Red Cross will collect the cards and send them to military members within a few weeks.
