Police investigate after dead animals found at Indiana shelter

Posted: Updated:

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Central Indiana police are investigating whether neglect played a role in the deaths of several animals at a suburban Indianapolis animal shelter.

Lawrence Det. Jim Vaughan told The Indianapolis Star officers found the carcasses Tuesday at Lawrence's animal shelter after they were called to investigate reports of juveniles throwing rocks at the shelter.

Vaughan says the officers found dead cats and dogs inside the shelter and the appearance of neglect.

He says only one employee works at the shelter. Vaughan says that employee, 49-year David A. Ross Jr., has been relieved of his duties.

Authorities are investigating whether there's sufficient evidence to file animal neglect charges in the case.
