Disabled vet, family ready to move into new and improved home

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A disabled veteran and his family are getting ready to move back into their new and improved home.

Since June, volunteers have been working to repair a home on Allison Way in Louisville.  It's part of the Operation Helping Heroes program.

Sgt. John Gatz served in the Gulf War and received a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan.  He found mold in his home and had to move his family to an apartment.

That's when the group stepped in to help.  Now the finishing touches are being done and the family plans to move back in this weekend.  Gatz says, "It means there's a lot of people out there that really do support vets and military guys and gals, so it's a lot more than just us moving in the house and getting it fixed and cleaned up, getting it safe for us."

The repairs were made using money donated from the community.
