HILLVIEW, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police in Bullitt County say they are searching for a suspect after a woman was shot with her own gun during a home invasion.
Police say it happened around 4 a.m. Monday at 307 Smith Lane in Hillview. A woman who lives there was taken to University Hospital after she says she got shot. Police are still searching for a man who shot her.
The woman told police a man pulled out her gun on her when she was attempting to let the dogs out early Monday morning. Police say this is not the first time a crime has been reported at this address this year.
Neighbors on Smith Lane say they did not hear any gunshots, but woke up to chaos.
"I didn't even hear dogs barking and they bark at anything," said Richard Johnson.
"Around 5 in the morning, we came out here and there was cops everywhere," said Ramona Johnson. "They told me that Charley had been shot and they asked me if she had any enemies."
A woman told police she found an intruder at the back door after hearing a noise outside the home. She grabbed her 9 mm pistol and that's when she says the suspect turned the barrel on her in the doorway.
"They got into a struggle. He wound up shooting her in the shoulder," said Det. Scotty McGaha of the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office.
Hillview residents say they are shocked.
"I don't know what to think," said Ramona Johnson. "I just don't know."
Johnson said the victim has a history of health problems. Another neighbor and friend of the victim says it's a quiet neighborhood.
"I think in 20 years, there's been a bicycle stolen, that's all," said Richard Johnson.
Police said two burglaries were reported at the same home in June, 2013. According to the reports, in one of the incidents, the victim claimed a man held a knife to her throat. The victim of those two burglaries, Charlyene Slusher, also named a neighbor as the probable suspect in a burglary on June 17. In the two burglaries reported in June at the residence, both had Oxycodone listed as being stolen. Jewelry and other items were reported missing from the report filed on June 7, which involved an unknown suspect holding a knife to the victim's throat.
"She had been a prior victim of an alleged burglary at that residence, so I think she probably had some fear of another burglary," said McGaha.
The suspect is described as a white man with a medium build, around 35-years-old with no facial hair. He was seen wearing a red ball cap. Police say they have little to go on
"She believed it may have been someone who wanted to hurt her and her family," McGaha said. "We have not confirmed any of that at this point."
McGaha said the woman is expected to be okay. Anyone with information is asked to call the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office at (502) 543-2514.
