LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Assumption made an early second-half goal stand up as they captured the Kentucky State Field Hockey Championship 1-0 over Sacred Heart at Bellarmine University. The Valkyries had beaten the Rockets by the same score in last season's title game.
Assumption scored on a corner less than three minutes into the second half. Kate Miller passed to Bailey Higgins. Her pass to Lillie Nitzken was deflected to Becca Thieneman, whose drive toward the goal was re-directed in by Sophomore Kate Miller.
Sacred Heart had several chances to score in the next ten minutes, but were turned away by Goalie Sidney Lococo and the Rocket defense. Assumption controlled the ball in the final minutes with five late corners.
After being postponed Thursday because of the threat of severe weather, the game was played under mostly sunny skies with the exception of a ten-minute hailstorm during halftime that sent fans and players scurrying for cover and delayed the start of the second half for ten minutes.
The Rockets last state title came in 2009.
