LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a Louisville man stabbed his neighbor to death, and then returned home to take his wife to the hospital where she later delivered their baby.
LMPD received a call around 8:00 Sunday morning. A neighbor called to say the 23-year-old mother of three was stabbed to death in her apartment. The coroner's office on Monday morning identified her as 23-year-old Jovon Dawson. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:57 a.m. Sunday. The cause of death was listed as multiple sharp force injuries.
It happened in an apartment complex on Lindell Ave. near Broadway in the Shawnee neighborhood. Police say Michael Hayes, who was arraigned Monday morning on charges of murder, entered his neighbor's apartment late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
Marrina Dawson, the victim's sister says, "We are mourning right now and we do love our sister. She is deeply missed. We are still surprised and shocked about what's going on."
Lt. Todd Kessinger with the LMPD Homicide Unit says, "The six-year-old daughter woke up, found her mother laying in the kitchen in a large pool of blood, went to a neighbor, and the neighbor came in and got the other two children and took them out of the apartment."
Family members say Dawson was on maternity leave as a certified nursing assistant. Her youngest child is just three months old. The three children are now staying with family.
Dawson's neighbor, Michael Hayes, is now behind bars on a $250,000 full cash bond. Police say he admitted he tried to rob Dawson for a large amount of drugs late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Then police say there was a fight that ended with Hayes stabbing Dawson several times. Police say he got away with some personal belongings and a gun, but no drugs were found.
But what he did after that, surprised some people.
Kessinger says, "The suspect when he went back to his house [after the murder], he took his wife to Norton's Hospital, she delivered their baby shortly after yesterday afternoon."
The victim's family says residents inside the apartment complex claim they didn't hear anything, so the family is urging that residents come forward.
Dvonda Dawson, the victim's sister says, "We just want justice for everyone. She was 23-years-old. She didn't deserve to die like this. She was a good person. She was too good for this. She would want justice and we want justice for her and we will not rest easily until we get justice for her."
Dawson's three children, all under the age of six, were sleeping in the bedroom at the time.
LMPD says this is Louisville's 43rd murder of 2013.
