Jeffersonville Big Four Bridge ramp may not open until spring 2014
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jeffersonville city officials believe completion of the Indiana ramp to the Big Four pedestrian bridge may not come until spring -- raising the possibility the opening could come one year or more later than initial estimates.
They cite further delays in manufacturing and installation of metal handrails, including specially-lighted rails. Previous estimates on opening the Jeffersonville side of the bridge were slated for April, August and November of this year.
The Jeffersonville ramp ends in a new park that's also under construction. Redevelopment commission chairman Monty Snelling said he doesn't mind further delays if they will guarantee construction will be finished properly. The delays could also allow further work on the new park, Snelling said.
The Indiana ramp, when open, will allow people to walk or bike the Big Four Bridge between Jeffersonville and Louisville. Those people now must walk onto the bridge from Waterfront Park in Louisville. They find a gate at the Indiana end of the bridge and must turn around to exit. The Big Four opened from the Kentucky side in February and has been a popular attraction.
